Canterbury Park is preparing for a shorter horse racing season this year as a deal between the park and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is reaching its end. In 2012, the Shakopee-based Canterbury Park Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: CPHC) agreed not to seek additional gaming, like slot machines, in return for purse investments from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, which owns and operates Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake. Now the 10-year deal is expiring, forcing the track to plan for smaller purses — or available prize money — for the 2023 racing season.
